Sketches, drawings and designs

How important are drawings for any building project, let alone an award winning design?  The value of drawings lies in their illustrating the idea simply and clearly but they may not be beautiful to look at.

Designs illustrate the practicality and effect of ideas. Done graphically they start as simple scratchings (see below) but with study, more data (and erasures), they may evolve into drawings.

In their simplest form, drawings (and sketches) are just diagrams; showing what things are and where things go.
Drawings done on computer or by skilled artists may be photo-realistic in detail but they still share the basic features of sketches which is to reveal the relationships of things.

Below: A sketch done on-site, studies the realtionship of beams, sheetrock, HVAC ducts, blocking, etc., to reconciled before knowing how to hang sheetrock and trim.
